MUSIC DEPARTMENT'S

CONCERTO FESTIVAL 2008

HOFMEYR HALL: WEDNESDAY 15 OCT at 19:30

A full professional symphony orchestra was engaged to accompany the top five "classical" music students from SACS High. These young gents acquitted themselves admirably! The works performed were:

Sam Wegener (Gr. 11) has composed an Overture (4 Mb of Mp3) which opened the concert.

Haydn: Trumpet Concerto FIRST MOVEMENT (6 Mb of Mp3); SECOND MOVEMENT (4 Mb of Mp3) - Soloist: Murray Meissner

David: Trombone Concertino SECOND MOVEMENT (4 Mb of Mp3); THIRD MOVEMENT (4 Mb of Mp3) - Soloist: Joseph Macmillan

~~~~~     INTERVAL     ~~~~~
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 1 (Mvt. 1) - Soloist: Daniel Gadd (15 Mb of Mp3)
Chaminade: Flute Concertino - Soloist: Simon Ackermann {winner of the 2008 Christopher Brown Memorial Instrumental Competition}
Kabalevsky: Piano Concerto No. 3 (Mvt. 1) - Soloist: Blake Hellaby (7 Mb of Mp3)
SACS is exceptionally fortunate to own a beautiful Steinway Model D Concert Grand which is kept in pristine condition by Garth Hammer of Ian Burgess-Simpson Pianos.
A wonderfully supportive audience encouraged the performers.  An email received the morning after reads as follows:
Dear John,
A magnificent success. You and Greta deserve the highest congratulations. I think you achieved something which no other school in the country has done. I hope you manage to keep it going. Your headmaster must be very proud!
Best wishes,
Peter
