Introduction

Cape Town Concert Brass is a collection of amateur musicians configured as a traditional English Brass Band.  Our repertoire varies from classical to jazz to arrangements of popular tunes.  The band members themselves have a variety of day-time jobs - including engineers, pharmacists, an actuary, a surgeon, students, academics, accountants, IT specialists, corporate trainers, a wine maker, an executive of a brewery, a geologist...

We aim to play at least 12 concerts per year; regulars now include the Bastille Day festivities in Franschhoek, the Whale Festival in Hermanus and Carols-by-Candlelight at Kirstenbosch Gardens.

Notes From The Rostrum

"I've had tremendous fun writing scores for the Cape Town Concert Brass: a wonderful group whose members take great delight in making music. I was appointed musical director in mid-2003 and I find this a hugely fulfilling experience on many levels - particularly the music making and the camaraderie. Shortly after I joined the CTCB I was inspired to compose a suite for Brass Band by an acerbic email written by a founder member that was circulated amongst the band members and which contained the following gem: "When the conductor requests something, mark it if you have the brain of a radish. John has referred to the semi-quavers in the English Folk Songs four rehearsals in a row! Why is this necessary?" ...and more...  Thus "March of the Radishes" et al were born...  Each piece has been inspired by a particular member or section of the band...  The suite comprises:
  • March of the Radishes
  • Turnip Salsa
  • Marrow March
  • The Beet Waltz
  • Swingy Sweaty Tubers
  • Pavane For A Deadbeat Parsnip (Not inspired by anyone in the band this time round...)

John has made these pieces available for bands to use at no cost.  Please feel free to download them.  All that he asks is that he receives acknowledgement as composer and that PRS returns are submitted as per normal.  The suite is being played on every continent and has received very favourable comment.  If the music is used then please let John know on jwalton@iafrica.com.
John has also arranged quite a number of pieces for Brass Band ranging from Hymns and Carols to Pop tunes and Big Band Standards such as "Mack The Knife".  Contact him for further information on jwalton@iafrica.com.
